Family Martial Arts in Gastonia: Train Together at Solecki Jiu Jitsu

Most family activities are something you do next to each other. You sit in the same movie theater. You eat at the same restaurant. You're in the same place, but you're not really doing something together. Family martial arts in Gastonia at Solecki BJJ is different. When your family trains here, you're learning together, struggling together, growing together, and building something that actually matters.

I built this academy with family at the center. I started training BJJ when I was six years old, and my journey through martial arts shaped who I am today. One of the things I'm most proud of at Solecki BJJ is seeing entire families from Gastonia, Belmont, Mount Holly, and Dallas walk through our doors and build something real on the mat together.

How Families Train Together at Solecki BJJ

A question I get from parents all the time is: "Can we actually train at the same time as our kids?" The answer is yes, and here's how it works.

Our class schedule is built so families can make one trip to the academy and train during the same block of time:

  • Kids BJJ (ages 6-14) meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:00 PM
  • Advanced adult class runs at 6:00 PM on those same days
  • Fundamentals adult class starts at 7:15 PM Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Tuesday and Thursday sessions include Intro to BJJ at 5:30 PM, Fundamentals at 6:00 PM, and Advanced at 6:45 PM
  • Saturday NoGi runs from 12:00 to 1:15 PM for everyone
  • Friday open mat from 6:00 to 7:00 PM is available for all skill levels

So a typical family evening looks like this: you drop your kid off for the 5:00 PM kids class, then you jump on the mat for the 6:00 PM or 7:15 PM adult class. Your kid finishes up, watches you train, and you drive home together talking about what you both learned. Or on Saturdays, you're training side by side during the same session.

That shared experience changes the dynamic. You're not just telling your kids to work hard and be disciplined. You're showing them.

Why Training as a Family Changes Everything

You Lead by Example

Kids don't listen to what you say. They watch what you do. When your child sees you struggling with a new technique, getting tapped by someone better, getting back up and trying again, they learn more about resilience in that moment than any conversation could teach them.

I've seen parents who started training alongside their kids become the most powerful positive influence in their child's development. When your kid is frustrated about not getting a move right, you can say "I know, I struggled with that too" and actually mean it. That connection is powerful.

Shared Language, Shared Goals

Families who train together develop a common vocabulary and common goals. You talk about guard passes at the dinner table. Your kid shows you the sweep they learned in kids class. You celebrate each other's stripe promotions.

This creates a bond that's deeper than most family activities. You're not just spectators in each other's lives. You're training partners. You understand what the other person is going through because you're going through it too.

Quality Time That Actually Means Something

I'm not going to tell you that family game night is bad. But there's a difference between sitting around a board game and pushing through a hard training session together. BJJ gives families a shared challenge that builds real character in every member, parent and child alike.

Families from all across Gaston County have told us that training together is the best thing they've done as a family. It gives everyone a reason to put their phones down, get off the couch, and do something meaningful together.

Real Families, Real Results

One of our families has a dad who trains in the evening adult classes and two kids in our 5:00 PM kids program. The dad told me recently that the drive home from the academy is the best conversation he has with his kids all week. They talk about what they learned, what was hard, and what they want to work on next. No phones, no distractions, just genuine connection.

Another family started with just their son in the kids program. After a few months of watching from the sidelines, mom signed up for Fundamentals. Then dad followed. Now all three of them train, and they've become some of our most dedicated members. The parents say it's the only activity the whole family is equally excited about.

That's the culture we've built here. This isn't a gym where you drop off your kid and wait in the car. This is a place where families come together.

The Family-Oriented Culture at Solecki BJJ

When you look at our Google reviews, the word "family" comes up constantly. That's not marketing. That's what people actually experience when they walk through our doors.

Our core values are Community, Ownership, Resilience, and Effort. Those apply to every member, regardless of age. We hold kids and adults to the same standard of respect, effort, and accountability. When a family trains together under those values, it creates consistency. Your kids hear the same message at the academy that they hear at home.

We also make it a point to keep the environment welcoming for families who are brand new. If your family has never done martial arts, you're not behind. Everyone starts somewhere. For a detailed look at what first-timers can expect, read our post about what to expect at your first BJJ class.

Practical Logistics for Families

Here's the stuff parents actually want to know:

  • Multiple family members can train. We have programs for kids ages 6-14 and adult classes for anyone 15 and up. If you have children in different age groups, our kids class accommodates the full 6-14 range.
  • Schedule coordination is easy. Kids classes and adult classes run back to back on the same days, so you make one trip to the academy.
  • No long-term contracts required to get started. We want you here because you want to be here, not because you're locked in.
  • Your first class is free. Every family member gets a free trial class to see if BJJ is right for them.
