After-School Martial Arts for Kids in Gastonia

After-School Martial Arts for Kids in Gastonia
If you're a working parent in Gastonia, you know the 3:00 to 6:00 PM window is the hardest part of your day to manage. School lets out, and then what? Your kid is home alone with a screen, or you're scrambling to find something productive for them to do. Most after school activities for kids in Gastonia are either glorified babysitting or don't actually build anything meaningful. BJJ at Solecki BJJ is different. Our 5:00 PM kids classes give your child real skills, real discipline, and a real community during those critical after-school hours.
I started this academy because I believe martial arts changes lives. I've seen it change mine, and I've watched it change the lives of kids from Gastonia, Belmont, Dallas, and Mount Holly who walk through our doors every afternoon.
The 5:00 PM Kids Class: Built for After-School Families
Our Kids BJJ class for ages 6-14 runs Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:00 PM. That timing is intentional. It gives kids enough time to get home from school, grab a snack, and decompress before training. And it's early enough that they're done by 6:00 PM, leaving the rest of the evening for dinner, homework, and family time.
Here's what a typical after-school training day looks like for our families:
- 3:00-3:30 PM -- School lets out, kid gets home
- 3:30-4:30 PM -- Snack, start homework, get ready for class
- 4:45 PM -- Head to Solecki BJJ
- 5:00-5:55 PM -- Kids BJJ class
- 6:00 PM -- Home for dinner with energy spent and focus sharpened
For parents who work until 5:00 or later, many families coordinate with another training family for a quick carpool. The BJJ parent network at our academy is real, and people look out for each other. That's part of the community we've built.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we offer Intro to BJJ at 5:30 PM, which is a great option for kids who are brand new and want a slightly later start.
Why BJJ Beats the Alternatives
Let's be honest about what most after-school options actually offer.
Screens and Unsupervised Time
The default for a lot of kids after school is going home and getting on their phone, tablet, or gaming console until a parent gets home. That's two to three hours of zero physical activity, zero social interaction, and zero skill development. By the time dinner rolls around, your kid has done nothing productive, and good luck getting them focused on homework after that.
Traditional After-School Care
After-school programs keep kids supervised, and there's value in that. But most of them are just structured time-killing. Kids sit around, maybe do crafts, maybe play outside. It's fine, but it's not building anything.
Team Sports
Sports are great, but they're seasonal. Soccer ends. Basketball ends. And during the off-season, you're back to square one. BJJ runs year-round, and the skills compound. Every month your child trains, they're building on what they learned the month before.
BJJ After School
BJJ gives your kid everything the alternatives don't:
- Consistent physical activity three to five times per week, year-round
- Real skill development that builds over months and years
- Discipline and structure during the hours when kids need it most
- Positive social interaction with peers who push each other to improve
- Confidence and self-defense skills they carry everywhere
What Kids Get Out of After-School BJJ
I've been coaching kids since 2012. Here's what parents consistently report after their children start training in our after-school classes:
Better evenings at home. Kids come home from training with their energy spent productively. They're calmer, more focused, and more willing to do homework and help around the house. The afternoon restlessness that drives parents crazy is gone.
Improved school performance. The focus and discipline kids build on the mat transfer directly to the classroom. Following instructions, paying attention, working through frustration instead of giving up -- these are mat skills that become school skills.
Stronger friendships. The kids in our program become each other's support system. They see each other three to five times a week, they challenge each other, and they celebrate each other's progress. For kids who struggle socially at school, the BJJ community provides a reliable group of friends who share their values.
Less screen time. This one is simple. If your kid is at BJJ from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, they're not on a screen. And they come home tired enough that they're more interested in eating dinner and going to bed than scrolling through TikTok.
Practical Information for Parents
Here's what you need to know:
What to wear: For the first class, athletic clothing is fine. If your child continues, they'll need a gi (uniform), and we can point you in the right direction for getting one.
What to bring: A water bottle. That's it.
Drop-off and pickup: Classes start at 5:00 PM and end around 5:55 PM. Please arrive by 4:50 PM so your child can get changed and ready. Pickup is right at 6:00 PM.
Commitment level: We recommend at least two sessions per week for steady progress. Three times per week is where kids really start to take off. But we work with every family's schedule.
First class is free: No strings attached. Bring your kid, let them try it, and see how they feel.
